Calling Pirelli calendar one of the most prestigious calendars in the fashion world and pop culture won’t be an exaggeration. Published by the UK subsidiary of Milan based multinational Pirelli, the calendar has a history of 30 years of magnificience. Some of the world’s most recognizable faces from screen, art world, philanthropy, theater and runway such as Heidi Klum, Penelope Cruz, Sophia Loren, Hilary Swank, Lakshmi Menon, Yamila Díaz and Anja Rubik and more have been featured.
The list of shutter gods involved in the shoots since 1964 is impressive, especially if it’s photographers like Steve McCurry, Patrick Demarchelier, Terry Richardson, Peter Linderbergand Marcus Piggot. And for the 2016 edition, the reign was given to Annie Leibovitz, one of the biggest names in the industry today.
For the 2016 edition of the calender, photographer Annie Leibovitz was roped in and the mix of women posing for her all have had illustrative careers. Chinese actress and UN Goodwill ambassador Yao Chen, supermodel and philanthropist Natalia Vodianova, Hollywood producer Kathleen Kennedy, tennis superstar Serena Williams, author and public speaker Fran Leibovitz, Style Rookie editor Tavi Gevinson, Iranian visual artist Shirin Neshat, activist Yoko Ono, Singer Patti Smith and comedien Amy Schumer feature.
So far it is one of the most real and impactful Pirelli shoots to be done, as opposed to a number of super sexy and dramatic ones in the past. Talking about how this shoot was a big deal, Leibovitz said “Pirelli came to me and told me they wanted to shift this year to something different. I made the suggestion that they do women performance artists or women comedians, almost a take-off. I just thought of women I admired and I didn't let anyone in the studio from Pirelli. I still can't believe the women who agreed to do it, did it. I felt a big responsibility to that. It shouldn't be a big step, but it is a big step.”
