If there’s any outfit that’s both elegant and versatile, you’ve got to hand it to the sari. It can be worn on any occasion and it can take you from sexy to formal depending on your mood or the situation. The only thing you need is the right kind of sari, and you’re more or less set to make a great impression.
So what kind of sari works for work? We give you the low-down. And don’t worry – these won’t blow a hole in your wallet either.
Crepe Control: If you use public transport, then you may prefer crepe as your sari fabric of choice because it doesn’t wrinkle very easily. Try one with a digital print to make a statement at the workplace. Black and white is a great colour combo for a formal office environment, and you can pair it with a black blouse with elbow-length sleeves. Small diamond studs in your ears, a smart watch and your hair up in a messy updo – go wow those clients! (Do you also have long hair? Go try these amazing hairstyles!)
Cool as Cotton: Agreed this fabric is a little high-maintenance for everyday workwear but if you are looking or something that fetches plenty of compliments, then nothing beats a cotton sari. Try one with a border for a formal look in the boardroom. The material keeps you cool during hot summer days. You can pair it with a blouse that has a mandarin collar and short sleeves, and accessorize with gold studs and a simple gold bracelet. Tie your hair up in a ponytail and you’re all set to make a ‘power’ point.

Shine in Chiffon: A chic chiffon sari may perhaps not lighten your hectic workload but it will definitely help in keeping you light and cool at work. Go for geometric prints – they are in trend and look great in the corporate environment as well. Tone down the oomph at work with a blouse that has a simple round neck and elbow-length sleeves, and accessorize with silver earrings or a Swarovski pendant. The same sari can be worn with a sexy backless blouse when you step out for a party after office hours.
Sweetheart Silk: They say old is gold and the same goes for this fabric. Developed several millennia ago, silk is a breathtaking fashion fabric even today. It is admittedly expensive and uncomfortable in very hot weather, but you can go for new-age fabrics like cotton-silk and art-silk that give a silk-like appearance with the comfort of cotton and are low in cost as well. In winter, a silk sari is perfect for an official event. Pair it with a full-sleeved blouse and classic jewellery.
Gorgeous Georgette: This is just the perfect fabric for summer months – a vibrant georgette sari will pep you up when you’re feeling under the weather. It’s a great option to pack along for an office trip or to take you from office to party with a quick change of blouse. A square-back blouse and chunky beaded necklace are all you need. A braid adds to the feminine quotient.

Party Pick: We all know work is not just about work but also about the occasional official party. After displaying your traditional Indian look at work all week, surprise your colleagues with a glamorous, sexy sari at an after-work event. A plain sari in a falling material paired with a boat-neck sheer blouse or a contrasting lace blouse adds oomph. Wear just one statement piece of jewellery such as large jhumka earrings, and leave your hair open in soft curls.
