College life is very interesting and exciting! Actually, it’s probably the most exciting phase in your life. We meet new people, we learn new things, we become more responsible (okay, atleast we pretend to have become more responsible), and try new things. But sometimes, trying new things is not by choice!
It is the last option that you have and so was the case with me, when I had to wax at home. No, I was not trying to save money! It was a Bharat bandh that day – and you know what that means – all shops and salons were closed. And I had to get waxed that very day to wear a dress to my friend’s party in the evening.
Everybody in my hostel came up with their individual pieces of advice, from shaving and bleaching to hair removal creams. But I was too apprehensive to try any of these as I had heard of the many side- effects.
Then came a wise word from a senior – ‘Why don’t you try waxing yourself’? I was shocked and surprised, both at the same time! Was it even possible? Will I survive this experiment? Or will I have to miss my friend’s party?
So after mustering all my courage and praying to god a million times to keep me safe, I finally began the process. As per my senior’s instructions, I started melting sugar mixed with lemon juice in a double boiler and tore up an old pair of jeans into strips. Now came the tough part, waxing!
With the help of the same senior, I started spreading the molten sugar mixture on my legs using a butter knife. In my head I was recalling everything that my parlourwali aunty did while waxing. Then I put the denim strip on the sugar applied area, rubbed it for a few seconds and pulled it off in the opposite direction of application.
I had a clear patch of skin on my (extremely hairy) leg! And trust me it was much less painful than the usual waxing process. I did my complete legs on my own and after close observation of the whole process, my friend helped me with my arms.
Despite being effective and successful, the whole process was quite messy with the sticky sugar solution all around us.
So if you also happen to get stuck in a situation like this and are planning to wax at home then be smart. Spread a lot of old newspapers around you and apply a very thin layer of the sugar solution to lessen the mess.
