During summer, heat and humidity can cause oil glands to work overtime, making one’s skin oilier. In people with oily skin, the excessive oil and dead skin cells can clog one’s pores and may lead to pimples. Here are six important tips for those with oily skin in summers under the supervision of a dermatologist to keep skin healthy and radiant.
1.Cleanse But Avoid Overcleansing: Use a pH balanced cleanser twice daily followed by an appropriate toner. Don’t cleanse too often because that may break down the skin’s protective barrier, causing excessive dryness, irritation, and even breakouts.
2. Moisturize: Oily skin also needs moisturizing. A lightweight, water-based moisturizer is a good choice. Opt for non-comedogenic formulas that won't clog pores. Apply the moisturizer only on the areas where you feel the need.
3. Follow A Sun Protection Regime: Use a non-comedogenic, broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day. In addition, use other sun protection measures like sunglasses, hats or caps.
4.Use The Right Products Appropriately: It has been seen that a number of people who have oily skin over-indulge in products because they want to dry the skin out as much as possible. But this may irritate the skin and trigger the oil glands to produce even more oil. If one has oily skin, it does not mean that it’s not sensitive. Using too many products with multiple ingredients could do more harm than good. Introduce one product at a time and wait a week or two for your skin to become used to it. You may start with a salicylic acid product and allow your skin to adjust to it before adding another ingredient like glycolic acid. One must opt for products labeled as non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic.
5. Exfoliate And Mask It: You should exfoliate your skin once a week. Try a mild, gentle face scrub containing fine particles and be very gentle while using it. You should follow this up with a mask – try something with clay or salicylic acid as they both temporarily decrease oil production in the skin.
6. Opt For The Right Diet: It is a common myth that oily food causes oily skin. This is not correct. In fact, certain oils like fish oils which are high in omega-3 fatty acids have been found to help reduce acne because of their anti-inflammatory properties. Sugary foods, dairy products and processed carbohydrates like cakes, pastries, white bread and pasta have been found to worsen oiliness and pimples. It is advisable that you eat frequent small meals to keep your blood sugar stable as this will help in reducing oil production and clogged pores.
