Mules are backless shoesthat are often closed at the toe and are worn mostly by women. Available in a variety of heels, the history of the shoe goes back to the 16th century. These shoes were initially known as ‘CalceusMulleus’, and are a prototype of shoes worn by Roman senators. Historically, mules were worn by the upper-class and favoured by the aristocrats due to their chic appearance, but became infamous later due to being preferred by sex-workers. They gained popularity in fashion circuits in the 1950s and then remerged in the 90s and early 2000s. Since then, mules have been reinterpreted a number of times and, last season, they were a rage on the ramp.

Why are mules special? What makes mules convenient to wear is their ability to slip them on and off, and the range of styles they are available in. When you buy mules, make sure that the heel of the shoe isn’t oversized and doesn’t hang over the back edge or the sides of the shoe – that looks shabby. While you don't want to see too much of the soles around your feet, a slight margin will prevent you from looking as if you crammed your feet into shoes that don't fit. Be sure to stand and walk in the mules you're considering.

How to wear mules: Given the fact that mules are convenient to wear, they are fast becoming a part of every fashionista’sshoe closet. Last season we saw a number of designers from Stella McCartney, Alexander Wang to Victoria Beckham present interesting versions of mules.
They are pretty versatile too. Fit for some of the most formal events, mules can also be worn for those casual day outs when you want to dress easy.
One thumb rule to be kept in mind is that sleek and high heels are formal while the chunky ones are meant for informal occasions.
With the changing trends, designers have experimented with shapes and size of the heels: you can get them bejewelled with furs, with fringes, chunky heeled, studded with spikes or studs, and made in leather or plastic with an array of prints and patterns.
Mules can be an interesting addition to your summer wardrobe. Pull out those culottes, pair them with a white shirt and wear them with mules. If you want to have some fun, go for sexy denims, a white T-shirt and floral blazer. Heading out for a formal meeting? Pair a sleek black suit, a white shirt and high-heeled mules and you are ready to make a statement.
