If you think flip-flops were comfortable, you need to try espadrilles. From being a type of footwear meant for peasants to being worn by the Hollywood legend Grace Kelly and cult artist Pablo Picaso, espadrilles have come a long way. Originally made in the Pyrenees Mountains in Europe, they were continuously produced across the Mediterranean for over 700 years. In 1950, with evolving footwear trends, espadrilles became a rage. In 1960s, the Parisian designer Yves Saint Laurent received a special order for a heeled espadrille. It was for the first time that anyone heard of heeled espadrilles and it marked this footwear's entry in the high-fashion scene.

    Why Wear Espadrilles?
Espadrilles form the most basic part of a man’s summer footwear wardrobe. If you are packing for a summer escape, espadrilles are the kind of shoes that you must go for. What makes them a great choice is their construction. They keep your feet cool and allow proper ventilation during those humid summer days. Most times, the sole of the shoes are made of recycled rubber, which adds an element of eco fashion to them and also makes them extremely comfortable to wear. At times, the foot bed of the shoe is also made of braided natural fibers. The sole is soft and flexible with the upper canvas covering the foot like a shield.

    Espadrilles in Contemporary Fashion:
Espadrilles have become a trend that has been appreciated by a number of fashion designers the world over. They are not just symbols of comfortable footwear anymore. Over the years they have been interpreted by a number of designers. Bigwigs such as Dolce & Gabbana, Missoni, Gucci and Fendi have created stunning and colourful versions of espadrilles. Valentino has tried to give them an elegant look by making them in lace and adding a rockstud leather strap to them. Lanvin interpreted these espadrilles as tasseled sandals and Gucci added a ribbon at the ankle. So go ahead and incorporate espadrilles in your wardrobe. It is not dressing down but it is dressing comfortable and chic.
