The origin of the now must-have epic trench coat dates back to World War 1 when it was created as an alternative coat for French and British soldiers. It has ruled the hearts of fashionistas across the world for decades and our Bollywood stars are also not untouched by its charm. Be it men or women, every trendsetter has contributed to making the trench coat a wardrobe staple.
The trench coat is a waterproof raincoat made of heavy-duty materials and comes in various lengths ranging from almost ankle-length to a little above the knees. The traditional trench coat is double breasted with 10 buttons but several stylish variables are now available in the market.
Wear your trench coat as a dress. While doing this, keep your body type in mind and choose the correct length. The longer the coat, the more elegant it looks. Pair it with basic flats like Deepika for a day event or with heels as does Kangana for an evening out. Aishwarya wears it with boots to make a style statement. One could accessorize further with a tote, an oversized clutch and a pair of gloves. If you are not a fan of keeping things simple, you could opt for a textured trench coat instead of a plain one.
Opt for a casual look with a belted trench coat. If you're not in the mood to dress up, choose a colour of your choice and tie the belt in a casual knot. Worn over jeans, a casual dress or a even a sari, the trench coat will add oodles of aplomb to your very-casual, dressed down look. While Sridevi rocked the sari and trenchcoat style in 'English Vinglish', Anushka Sharma prefers to layer it with a dress and Isha Koppikar throws it on a pair of jeans and tee.
Another cool way of donning the trenchcoat is to simply drape it over the shoulders as a cover up. This works best for wearing it to a formal evening occasion over a gown or a dressy sari.

The trench for men: Men are definitely not lagging behind in the battle of the trenches. A trench coat makes a man look classy and elegant, at the same time adding to the masculinity of the look. While Saif Ali Khan wears it open buttoned with a casual jeans and sweatshirt attire, model/actor Jas Arora wears it with a formal ensemble. If you are man who can think beyond blacks, whites and neutrals, you could sport a clean cut trench coat in a bright hue of your choice.

Belt the coat: Don’t like to wear your coats open? You very well have the option to button it up or even better - to belt it. Tie the belt in a clean knot. Opt for a longer trench like David Beckham or Brad Pitt for a more formal look. A slightly shorter trench in a dark winter hue is a great choice for a party look. Enhance your look with accessories like a classy watch or a pair of tinted shades. You could even put on a cap for a more winter savvy style. Avoid casual shoes! Pointed and patent should be your motto when choosing a pair of shoes for this fashion.
