Is your shampoo safe? That is one question you don’t ever want to hear. Because you are of the mindset that shampooing is not a big deal. You use your favourite shampoo, slather on some conditioner and once a week, treat your hair with a good hair mask. But have you ever stopped to wonder if your hair care ritual is safe? Have you ever really bothered to read the label on your shampoo bottle? If you did, then you’d know that the world is facing a big problem with hair care that lists sulphate as an ingredient.
Sulphate is bad, if so how? Let’s get to the beginning - sulphate is used in shampoos to give them the much-needed lather. They produce the much-loved foam. They give you that lift, create heavy lather and make you feel like all that dirt is out in a jiffy. It’s pretty common and sulphates are not just part of shampoos, they are in your cleaning agents like floor cleaners, toilet cleaners, kitchen agents etc.
What’s to be looked into is the fact that the same sulphates are seen as chemicals that are not really necessary in the welfare of the hair. Sulphates are known to cause Cancer in some ways. Sodium laureth sulphate and sodium lauryl sulphate are not seen as carcinogens by the American Cancer Society. But you must also realise that some mutations could lead to cancer. There is no hard truth on this matter yet.
Sulphates in shampoos mean harsh chemicals and when the world is moving towards an organic and healthier way of living then why not choose that. Besides, they are also seen as causing dryness, irritation, allergies and hair loss. Sulphates are also attributed to problems like itchy scalp, dermitits, eczema and extreme frizziness.
It is said that hair grows faster, hair colour remains for more time and your curls linger on for longer if you use a sulphate-free formula. So switch to a sulphate-free shampoo to stay on the right side of hair care but make sure you know two things. Sulphate-free shampoos are not really cheap. Secondly, you won’t get much lather when you shampoo. That doesn’t mean your scalp and hair are not cleansed.
