There used to be a time when the easiest thing to buy was a pair of regular jeans. With the passage of time, as with every other thing, jeans too have evolved and choosing the right pair of this versatile staple is trickier than you think it is. The normal pair now comes in different fits and washes and what seem to be gathering a lot of attention (for often the wrong reasons) are skinny-fit jeans. Before you decide whether to wear them or not, let’s define the term skinny. When we say the fit of a certain pair of jeans is skinny, it goes a step beyond being tapered; it simply fits you like a second skin.

Why you should not wear skinny jeans: Didn’t we say they fit like second skin? If that wasn’t enough, they leave little to the imagination. If you are generously endowed down there, skinny jeans should be a sure no-go for you. They are women repellants! Seriously, unless you have other preferences, you don’t want to be seen in those legging-like jeans by the women of your dreams. You are in serious ‘jegging’ territory and your girlfriend doesn’t want to see you in hers. Be a man, keep it under covers.
The forgiving slim-fit: Slim-fit jeans can make your body look like that of a pregnant woman’s if you are one of those regular Indian men with a disproportionate body (we know you love food more than clothes!). So opt for a nice slim, straight-cut pair! They are much more forgiving -- just slightly hugging the thighs, knees and calves opening up at the ankles. They give you a crisp, sharp and clean look without hurting your masculine demeanour. Wear them with a basic tee like David Beckham (see photo, right) or layer it with a cardigan like Ryan Gosling (see photo, left). An added advantage is that they make brogues look fabulous.
How to wear skinny jeans: If you still insist on wearing skinny jeans despite our warning, please make sure you are a tall man with a proportionate body and toned legs. A puffed-up torso and bony legs do not work; nor do plump legs and a rotund middle. If your body is far from perfect, find a good pair of printed skinny jeans. The print takes some attention away from the fit.
Though he may not be the favourite fashion icon of many, yet actor Russell Brand has a very original style and he has managed to create a unique image. What makes Brand look good in skinny jeans is the fact that he is tall, broad and well-toned (some of the very reasons we mentioned!). If his edgy indie-rocker style appeals to you, slip into a distressed pair, pair it with complementing separates and yes, don’t forget your threads and beads.
