She started out making soaps for her premature baby, now she supplies handmade beauty products all over India.
Pooja Goyal, who was brought up in New Delhi and now lives in Cochin, Kerala, found her heart’s calling only after her baby was born three years ago. The 34-year-old always wanted to do something creative as a child, but it took a difficult pregnancy and premature childbirth to really force her into the laboratory.
With a B.Com degree and a first job as an art teacher, Pooja never thought she’d get into soap-making. Her label was named after her daughter. “Kenisha Soaps was born out of a need, the need of a mother to make better soaps for her premature daughter. I never wanted to use any harmful chemical products for her tender skin and got the idea to make my own soaps that are safe and retain skin moisture. That is how I made my first batch two years ago,” she says.
With the love and support of her family, Pooja found the process to be creative, fun and playful. “My absolute favourite part is the creative aspect of mixing various oils and herbal colouring techniques, textures, and fragrances (essential oils). I work hard to make my products luxurious and fun,” she says.
Pooja’s family and friends soon wanted her natural, handmade products for themselves, and as her reputation began to spread through word of mouth, her passion turned into her career. She now makes soaps, lotions, serums, bath bombs, oils and scrubs in small batches using the best ingredients she can lay her hands on in Kerala. And her products are very reasonably priced, from Rs. 40 to Rs. 550.
Of late, she’s been thinking about investing in machines and more space so that she can make larger batches. “I feel really happy and satisfied when someone says that they have stopped using any other soap after using Kenisha Soaps and refer me to their friends and family,” she smiles shyly.
Kenisha products use no animal products, no artificial colouring, no synthetic fragrances, and no artificial preservatives. All products are cruelty-free, chemical-free, and Vegan PETA certified. “Our handmade soaps not only clean well, but also leave behind a protective layer of oil that locks in the moisture and keeps your skin supple. Your skin will never feel dry after using our soaps,” Pooja guarantees.
Her aim is two-fold: “I want to share the goodness of handmade soap with people so that they can reap the benefits in their body, mind and soul. And secondly, I am doing my bit save the earth by not adding chemicals and additives to our limited water resources.”
As a self-employed homemaker, Pooja usually works late nights to complete orders, cutting shapes, mixing ingredients, packaging and wrapping them for shipment. But it’s a happy space for her. She also customises products according to the client’s needs such as any special flavour or shape, or in case they need certain kinds of packaging for wedding favours, baby showers, birthday parties and so on.
Pooja – whose favourite hobby is posting pictures of her daughter on Facebook – says joy sometimes turns up in the most unexpected places. “Life is a canvas so paint it with all possible colours and make it beautiful and colourful,” she laughs.
