A handful of Bollywood stars have shown up at the Indian Couture Week 2016 and Delhi-ites are simply bedazzled with their fair share of celeb-spotting—from Deepika Padukone and Fawad Khan for Manish Malhotra to Yami Gautum for Rimple & Harpreet Narula, and Divya Khosla Kumar for Reynu Taandon.
Though many designers resent this dominance of Hindi cinema in what should be a business event of showcasing collections for buyers, visitors to fashion events admit that Bollywood celebrities are always the most exciting part of runway shows in India.
So the tactical manoeuvre that top bridal couturier Anamika Khanna pulled off at her show last night was significant. Everyone knows Sonam Kapoor is one of the greatest muses and ambassadors for the Kolkata-based designer (you can’t forget Sonam’s Cannes avatar wearing stunning Anamika Khanna ensembles). And yet, instead of having her walk as a showstopper, Anamika invited the globally hailed fashionista as a front-row guest.
Last season, Sonam had walked the ramp for Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla at the same fashion runway event. This time, Sonam posed for the shutterbugs on the red carpet in a metallic grey lace-finished sari-gown, teamed with polki earrings.
Anamika Khanna thus killed two birds with one stone – she got buyers to focus on her clothing on the ramp without the dazzle of Bollywood to blind them. And she got Sonam’s spectacular star power to pull in the media attention and fans.
She was already on the list of India’s most loved designers, but this move proves why Anamika Khanna is also the most respected.
